In praise of Potatoes!

by

Potatoes are one of the things on everyone’s mind at House of Friendship right now, since we’re in the midst of our annual Potato Blitz. During the various events throughout February House of Friendship hopes to collect enough potatoes or financial contributions to meet the needs of our various programs throughout the year.

So far Allison has covered some of the blitz events and how many potatoes they have collected,  but you may wonder, why are potatoes so important to House of Friendship?  The answer is simple: they are a chance for us to talk to someone about their neighbours who are less fortunate than they are.  Even if it is only for the short period of time it takes them to hand us a 10lb bag of delicious Yukon Gold potatoes, they have been able to put themselves in an other’s shoes, and find a way to help them.

If you would like more information on any of the blitz events, please email fundraising@houseoffriendship.org or call 519-742-8327. To make a contribution to our potato collection, feel free to drop off potatoes at our program, or to the Charles Street Men’s Hostel.

Potatoes are important to many people in our community, so it should come as no surprise that we have written more than one post on them. In fact when I searched through all the posts we have written I found that potatoes are mentioned in approximately 26 of the posts we have published. One of my favourites is from back when Emily covered the Potato Blitz drive last year, which you can read here.

This year Allison is in the heat of the action attending all the various blitz events such as the Don Cameron Potato night and the Supermarket Blitz. But the excitement with potatoes doesn’t end at these two events! There is still the Community Potato Lunch that is coming up on Friday February 25. And I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to read the stories, see the pictures, and hear about the success of the blitz (and maybe sample some of the tasty food).

Last year the community lunch served potato soup, baked potatoes and potato cakes. All of these are some of my favourite ways to eat potatoes! But then again I love almost any type of potato, like many of our patrons do, which you can read more about here.

Personally my favourite way to eat potatoes is in shepherd’s pie. One of the reasons it’s my favourite recipe is because I always seem to cook too many mashed potatoes for dinner. However shepherd’s pie allows me to use the leftover potatoes by adding ground beef and other vegetables to make a quick and nutritious dinner. Also doing this makes me happy because it keeps me from wasting food. To read an interesting article on how to avoid wasting food, click here.

So in honor of our friend the potato and the House of Friendship Potato Blitz, let’s all take this chance to list some of our favourite ways to eat potatoes. We’d love to hear your favourite recipes and know what special ingredients you use to really spice up your potatoes!
