Waterloo Region celebrates Eid-ul Adha

Today I would like to talk about one of the very important occasions that Muslims around the world celebrate this week, called Eid-ul-Adha or Eid ul Azah, or, in English, the festival of sacrifice.

There is a fascinating story that states the significance of Eid-ul Adha that I would like to share.  In Islam we believe that once, Allah (God) challenged or tested the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to prove his faith in God. God asked him to sacrifice the dearest and nearest one in his life. Prophet Ibrahim decided to take up the challenge and sacrifice his son Ismail.  This may be a familiar story to you becuase it is common to both Judiasm and Christianity as well. (more…)

Where I was born and grew up, people consume and cook a number of different food items, things that most people in Canada would be unfamiliar with. There aren’t too many things that I grew up eating that are sold here in the local stores, just like there aren’t a lot of people selling hot dogs on street corners where I was born. What is Ramadan in Islam?

Hello, my name is Nadir, I am an intake worker at the food hamper program, and for my first blog post I will talk a little bit about the holy month of Ramadan which has just finished.

Waterloo Region is a growing part of Ontario, and has always been a place where different people from different parts of the world come together, to live, to work and build a better life. These people bring their ideas, cultures and spirituality with them to their new home. We have always had strong Mennonite roots since the early days, but to that have been added different denominations of Christianity, and other religions, including, but not limited to Islam. (more…)
